Holistic education demands development of all aspects of individual’s personality . It is unfortunate that not much attention and emphasis is given to the development of interest . hobbies and passion of learners . Undoutdly , focusing on excellence in academic aspect alone results in lopsided development of personality . it is a revolutionary step on the part of the CBSE to introduce the CCE scheme which how is being adopted by a number of other boards for its precision .
With CCE aiming at all round development of the child’s personality ,it is expected that a student will be able to take up competitive examinations in right earnest . it may be clearly understood that introduction of CCE does not mean any less emphasis on academic attainment students will still be required to do well in studies . however due to acquisition of additional life skills , like thinking and emotional skills , they are expected to meet different life situations with greater maturity , linking their academic skill with practical life situations .
What is CCE ?
CCE stands for continuous and comprehensive Evaluation scheme and refers to a school based evalution of students that covers all aspects of a student’s development .
Continuous means regular . it implies regular assessments , together with analysis of learning gaps , applying corrective measures , retesting and giving feedback to teachers and students for self- evaluation etc.
On the other hand Comprehensive attempts to cover both the scholastic and process being assessed through Formative and Summative Assessments . Broadly , CCE assesses a child’s growth in two areas – Scholastic and Co-scholastic .
The term Scholastic refers to those aspects which are related to intellect . It is related to the assessment of learners in curricular subjects. It includes assingnments, projects, practices etc..

Formative Assessment (FA)
Formative Assessment includes all types of tests , formal and informal . Assessment can be done during the teaching process or after completing a unit . it Includes :
- Class Work Group Discussion
- Home Work Group Activity
- Worksheets Experiments
- Oral Test Projects
- Assignment Conversation /Interview
The record of FA will be maintained by the class teachers and subject teachers .
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT (SA)
This is the most traditional way of testing, that is paper-pen text based on the curriculum taught during the specified time period. Summative assessment is characterized as assessment of learning and is contrasted with formative assessment. This cumulative in nature and is utilized to determined whether students have met the specified goals of the course. The characteristics of Summative Assessment can be discussed as follows :
- It tends to use well-defined evaluation designs.
- It provides descriptive analysis in order to give a grade, all the activities done throughout the year are taken into account.
- It tends to stress local effects.
- It is antidepressive and not reactive as far as possible.
